Netherlands is a small country of 17 million people. It is famous for tulip gardens, wooden windmills, cheese, canals, millions of bicycles and fields below sea level. Here are my reflections on this remarkable country and people.

Zaanse Schans – Old Windmills in Netherlands

Zaanse Schans is one of the best-loved tourist destinations in Netherlands. Nearly a million people visit the place each year. The village presents a picture of what life was in Netherlands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It has old houses, traditional windmills and workshops. There were 600 windmills in the Zaan region in the old days. Now there are ten historic windmills in the typical Dutch wooden architectural style. They date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Dutch started building windmills as early as 1,200 AD to use them for grinding grains.
