Ayyappa Temple
I took this shot on 26 December last year. The temple was beautifully decorated with flowers and lights. It was the last day of Mandala pooja celebrations. The temple has special poojas and offerings on that day every year.

Location

The temple is in Vasai, Maharashtra. It is built in traditional Kerala style of temple architecture and is dedicated to Shri Ayyappan. Other deities are that of Shri Ganapathi, Durga Devi, Shri Subramania, Shri Krishna, Shri Shiva and the Nava Grahas. There is also a Sarpakkavu.

Camera Info

I was carrying my mobile camera Nokia C7-00 with me. I captured the image with it. Exposure program was in automatic. I later edited the photo in Photoshop with Curves and Color Balance adjustments.

Path to Horizon
I took this shot last week. There was a small stream which was leading to the tree line in the distance. The stream reflected the colours of the sky. The sun was low in the horizon and the sky had a golden glow.

Location

The location is the abandoned salt pans of Vasai. The area is vast and open. The water table had gone down. But there was still a stream running across the land.

Camera Info

The camera is Canon EOS 550D. I shot the image in RAW format which helped me capture the warm and soft colours. Aperture was f/8.0 and focal length 18 mm. ISO speed was set to 100. Exposure program was Aperture Priority. I used a shutter speed of  1/20 sec. The camera was hand held.

Season’s greetings and a happy new year to all my friends!

Kerala in the Rains
Kerala is the land of coconut trees. South-west monsoons (Edavapathy) bring rains to Kerala in the months of June to August. People look forward to seeing the drenched landscapes and wet rice fields. The environment stays cool and dust-free . The rainy season is best for Ayurveda therapies. See images of Kerala when it rains.

Location

The location is in North Kerala, near Payyanur. The shot was taken from a train when the rains had taken a short break. I used my Sony Cybershot camera.

Technical Data

I have used a shutter speed of 1/640 sec. to avoid motion blur. The aperture was at f/2.8 to let in more light. I used a focal length of 5.8 mm.

Photo Break
I came across a group of young workers laying a new power line. It was close to sunset. I was carrying my camera. They asked me to take their photo and I agreed. So they briefly stopped their work and posed for me. Some were carrying electrical insulators. After I took the shot, I showed it to them on the LCD screen of my Canon EOS 550D. They seemed happy and went back to work.

This photo will be published next month in the Winter 2014 issue of New Labor Forum, a magazine published in New York, USA.

Location

The image was captured near the salt pans of Vasai. The area was without electricity and running water. Many acres of land can be seen with hardly any human habitation.

Technical Data

The camera was in aperture priority mode with an aperture setting of f/8 so as to get a good depth of field. Shutter speed was 1/32 sec and focal length 18 mm.

Sunlit Woods

Sunlit Woods
Dalhousie is 80 km by road from Pathankhot. It is at a height of 2000 metres and is a popular hill station. The town is built on a hilly area and buildings are often standing on stilts on hill slopes. Cultivation is on terraces cut into the hills. Tall Deodhar trees are seen everywhere. I had gone there in June when the summer was coming to a close. Himalayan mountains could be seen at a distance.

Background

We were travelling by road to Khajjiar when the terraced hills caught my eyes. The hills were lit by bright sunshine. Some distance away, there was a wooded area of Deodhar trees.

Camera Info

The focal length was 14.3 mm which gave me a wide angle view. Aperture was set to f/4.5 and shutter speed was at a comfortable 1/200 sec. You can see the photo on my Flickr page. It is part of my Getty Images collection.
